Dental Bridges in Winter Haven, FL

Missing teeth can take a serious toll on your confidence. While those spaces between your teeth can have a cosmetic impact on your smile, you’re also more than likely experiencing functional problems, too. Frustration over these problems may contribute to your feelings of inadequacy. Replacing those teeth with dental bridges won’t just make you prouder to wear your everyday smile, it will also prevent long-term tooth and gum problems and restore functionality to your bite.

Whether you lost your teeth to injury, age, or tooth decay, you have options to restore your smile. Our restorative dentist in Winter Haven can work with you using smile design technology to craft and implement the smile of your dreams.

Dental Bridges Are a Smart and Beautiful Choice

Our teeth bear an incredible amount of weight. They withstand years of wear, tear, and abuse. They even shift to accommodate your bite and the way that you eat! These amazing features of our teeth can also cause problems in the long run.

Our teeth are meant to create a fairly even plane, especially on our back molars. This allows pressure to evenly disperse across each tooth. If one tooth sticks up farther (say, because a tooth is missing right next to it), then it’s taking more of the burden onto itself for biting and chewing.

To make up for this lack of support, it may begin to shift into that open space, giving your smile the appearance that more gaps are present than before. Your teeth can’t sustain that amount of added wear for a long period of time. They will lose more enamel, face a higher risk of injury, and be more vulnerable to tooth decay. That’s why replacing your teeth with dental bridges is a smart choice, too.

What Is a Dental Bridge?

Dental bridges literally bridge the gap between your natural teeth using a combination of dental crowns and one or more false teeth. There are a few different types of dental bridges, including:

  • Fixed bridges. These bridges are made up of two abutments and the replacement teeth. Abutments are the natural teeth on either side of a gap where a tooth is missing. To place the bridge, our dentist will grind down the tooth to fit into a dental crown. The replacement teeth are attached to the crown to create one piece.
  • Cantilever bridges. When you have natural teeth on only one side of a gap, cantilever bridges can affix to one or two abutment teeth on that side of the gap. The replacement tooth is permanently attached to one side.
  • Maryland bonded bridges. Rather than using dental crowns to stay in place, Maryland bonded bridges use invisible metal wings to secure the replacement tooth in place. These are most commonly used for front teeth.

We may use one or more of these types of bridges to fill the gaps in your smile. In order to keep your bridges in one piece, don’t chew or bite hard foods or objects. You’ll also need to floss underneath the bridge and maintain proper oral hygiene. With proper care and maintenance, bridges can last 15 years or more!
